Timeout

Now that Austin is 18 months old, I figured it was time to start trying timeout. Austin, like every child, does not always listen to what mommy & daddy say.... and spanking was just NOT working on this kid. I could spank him & it was like I never did a thing- no crying, no pouting, nothing. I even thought I'd spank him a little harder- but nothing.

Yesterday was Day 1, and he did really well! All 3 times were for getting into drawers that he is not supposed to get into (in our bedroom.) After I found him in "the act", I went and got him & told him why he was going into timeout. Our timeout spot is going to be on the mat at the front door (yes, INSIDE). One of my friends does her timeouts there, and I really like it (thanks Kristen!) That way I can still see him, yet there is NOTHING to do at the front door besides sit and think about what he's done! So as soon as I placed him on the mat, he started crying. Now I just KNEW he would get up several times, but he never did! I was so proud! I went into the kitchen and set the timer for 90 seconds and then did not look at him. After about 30 seconds he quit crying and just sat there. When the timer went off, I went in and got down on his level. I once again explained what he did wrong, and the "good" decision that he needs to make next time when minding mommy. During the talk, I made him look me in the face & of course he got his feelings hurt and started crying. Overall, I think it's going to work & I know he understands that he is in trouble when in timeout.

So here are a few pics of Austin in timeout. Yes, the timer had gone off & so it was officially over- but I'm sure he still thought I was crazy for taking a picture of him. Oh well, have to document these firsts!! :)

So Peaceful....

Isn't this just precious? Austin was exhausted after a day with Shane's extended family this past weekend, and he ended up falling asleep on the way home! I love those pretty eyelashes and perfect lips- so jealous!

18 Month "Official" post

A year & a half- wow, that sounds so much older than 18 months!! So here are his stats:

Height- 34 1/4" (97th percentile)
Weight- 30lbs (90th percentile)

Here's a list of things my sweet boy is doing these days:

*Austin is down to 1 nap a day... usually. He typically goes to sleep between 7-8pm and then wakes up anytime between 7:30-9am. If he goes down for a nap too close to lunch, then he might take another afternoon nap. The nap(s) are usually around 2 hours long... if we're lucky!

*He's still not talking a lot- he says mama, dada, papa (he learned that in florida last week), and fish. He does do a lot of pointing and babbling, so I know it's coming. The doctor doesn't seem worried at this point since I can say "go get your shoes" or "please put up your books" and he does it. He's stubborn like his mama and will do things in his own time!

*Austin walks on his tip toes & also backwards. He's very sturdy on his feet- except that he doesn't pay attention to where he is going & usually ends up running into something. He's covered in bruises and got a bloody nose a few weeks back.

*He loves doing patty cake, riding the horse (my leg or stomach), doing forward and backward rolls (with my help), jumping on Shane's back, and putting his hands in the air when we yell "TOUCHDOWN".

*Austin LOVES jumping- with both feet off the floor! Ask anyone who is every around us... he's constantly doing it! I'm very proud of him since it's the first thing he's done early (his Little Gym teacher said that kids don't typically do that with both feet off the floor until age 2!) Go Austin!

*He's now wearing some 18-24 month clothes.

*Austin (like most boys) enjoys climbing! He really likes stairs (thankfully we don't have any in our house), but he is having to learn how to sit on his bottom and scoot down them. At home he loves to climb up the back of our couch (how??) and also climb up and stand on the seat of his riding/push toys. A few days ago I caught him trying to climb the changing table... time to bolt things to the wall!

*He still has a temper! When he gets in trouble or when he's mad at me (for not letting him have something or go into a certain room), he throws his paci on floor. I ignore this, so he goes and gets the paci and throws it again. It's really quite funny. Also when I am getting on to him, I grab his little cheeks to get him to look me in the face, but he WILL NOT look me in eyes. He will look to the side, up, down, anywhere but AT me. UGH! We will be starting "time out" very soon!

*Austin has a very sweet & silly personality. He is happy & laughing most of the time! :) He especially enjoys trying to make people laugh!

*He loves sorting and organizing. If I scatter his food on the high chair tray, he will put it into piles. He also loves to take things out of containers and then put them back in. And recently he tries to get into every container/basket after he empties it. Obviously he does not fit in most of them! So what if he's a little OCD sometimes... it comes in handy when it's time to clean up!

*Austin does not drink milk. He hates cold milk, and will only drink warm milk from a bottle (which I won't give him at 18 mos.) The doctor isn't concerned about this either, as he gets plenty of calcium from other foods. He will sometimes drink chocolate milk (again, just like mama!)

*He runs a lot. More than he walks actually. The constant chasing gives me a workout... which is good since I never go to the gym anymore.

*Austin tries to play with Max & Jack often. Max doesn't care for it, but Jack will sometimes play back. He will now gently pet them, lay on them, and open mouth kiss their fur (or maybe he's trying to bite.) Who knows...

*He is still teething. The doctor just told me that he is getting his 2 yr molars right now. He has bitten Shane twice, but only bit me once (probably because I bit him back. Please don't call CPS on me... it worked....he hasn't done it since then!)

*Austin likes most foods! He just goes through phases where he gets burnt out. Right now he loves turkey dogs, PB&J, fish sticks, casseroles, strawberries, kiwi, mandarine oranges, anything sweet, fruit snacks, green beans, black beans, black eyed peas, lima beans, yogurt, pizza, crackers of any kind, and cat food (seriously....) As for dislikes- peas, carrots, raw veggies, bananas, potatoes (except fries), certain meats (texture).

*His favorite toys are stuffed animals, The Little People Farm, balls (he's learning to kick and throw them), legos, and especially books. He will go missing for a few minutes, and I always find him sitting in the living room or bedroom with all his books spread out. I noticed that he spends more time actually looking at them when I'm not around. If I read to him, he just wants to flip through the pages very quickly. If I'm not, he takes time to really study each picture. He's not coloring yet- he still wants to always put them in his mouth.

*Austin enjoys being around kids his age and has made some new friends recently! He loves his weekly class at The Little Gym, and I think the social aspect has been great for him! He's learing all types of tumbling, hanging from/swinging on the rings and bar, walking the balance beam, etc.

*He still likes the nursery at church, although they had to page us on promotion week. Evidently there is a girl in his class now that cries a lot, and that upsets Austin. Also, he evidently likes his old teacher better. So, they are keeping him in his old class... which is fine by me. Whatever keeps him happy!

We love you so much sweet Austin! We can't believe you are already getting so big! Happy 18 months!

COMING SOON: Pics of feeding the ducks and our trip to Destin!

18 months old already!

I'm working on the "official" 18 month post- but here is a cute picture until then! This kid loves spaghetti! I didn't cut up the noodles very well this time, so he had noodles hanging out of his mouth most of the meal... which was cute until he started gagging. Lessons learned.

On another note, I wanted to document the most recent fiasco with Jack (our adorable FREE kitten.) So after we dropped $400 on shots, neutering, and declawing, I thought we were set for a while. OH NO. After getting his bandages removed from the declawing, he starting licking/chewing at his paws a lot (which I was assured is perfectly normal.) What is not normal? To chew a portion of the pad off his foot! Yep. So we've (mostly me) taken him to the vet 6 times since last Tues. Wrap the foot, unwrap the foot, antibiotics, wrap the foot (bleeding again), unwrap the foot, antibiotics. When it's unwrapped, he starts chewing on it again, so the vet gave us the collar thing- which he HATED. So at this point he is living in the bathroom because of the bleeding... which usually starts when he and max get rowdy. Since we are leaving town this week, it is VERY important that it dries up and heals- otherwise I'll be covering everything in our house with towels and sheets. Oh, and now the tally is up to $600 for the FREE cat. Gotta love pets....

Bandaged paw

One more note, Austin got his foot stuck in the crib again today! It wasn't as funny this time... and I'm starting to wonder when he's going to figure out NOT to stick his leg through there!

As I previously mentioned, we're leaving for Destin later this week... so I'll try to post when we get back (if not sooner!)

Have a great week!

Stuck

Austin woke up from his nap earlier today & started crying/fussing after just a few minutes. He never does this- he usually just play for a while until I go in there to get him up. Well when I walked in, this is what I saw... yes, he was stuck!

What can I say...the boy loves water

The other evening we were outside playing, and as usual Austin ended up all all hot & sweaty. So we decided to just strip him down to a diaper and rinse him off with the water hose... how hick is that? Well he LOVED it! Check out the videos~

Yes, he is trying to drink the water.....

Notice the jumping- he's getting so good at it! I decided it wasn't best to encourage it since the concrete was wet & possibly a bit slippery.
